Amethyst, which is a variety of Quartz, varies in color from light lavender to deep purple. It is the birthstone for those born in February and is the zodiac crystal for the sign of Pisces. The name comes from the Greek word for “intoxicate” as it was thought that Amethyst protected its owner from drunkenness. When Amethyst is heated, it turns yellow/orange, and is known as Citrine.
